Kilkenny...Stook 10 mile - Sun 17th Nov 2013
The Stook 10-mile Run takes place in Dungarvan, County Kilkenny, on Sunday November 17th.
This is the 2nd year of the event which features a 10-mile road race and a 5k dash. Organised by Gowran AC it attracted over 500 runners in 2012.
Stook is a unique end of year blow out that combines a competitive club standard race with a fun challenge for runners of all abilities.
So what makes it different? How about the dedicated Tour de France style cheering zone, the Stook Flying Mile - a chip timed downhill mile that offers every runner a chance of an “official” mile PB. And everyone walks away with a Stook 2013 cowbell. There will be a bag drop and changing and toilet facilities at the start and finish.
According to race director, Simon O’Dwyer, “our aim with Stook is to grow slow and grow strong. We don’t want to be the biggest race in Ireland; we want to be the best. This year we are building on the great feedback we got last year– we know what we got right – friendly and welcoming atmosphere, unique cowbells, accurate course, fast results and an delicious spread in the parish hall last year and thanks to sponsors such as Amphibian King and Optimum Nutrition we were able to have some fun with spot prizes and giveaways. "
There are prizes for the first 3 men and women home, as well as cash category prizes for winners from 35 – 65. There is also a Liam Kealy Perpetual Club team prize for the first two men and women home on aggregate scores.
Online Entry for the 10 mile is €20 and the 5k is €10. There is a strict limit on the number of entries available.

Irish athletes look for funding for the Rio Olympics in 2016
As anyone who follows Irish athletics will know, funding for individual athletes is always an issue. Every year, the Irish Sports Council give out grants but only the very top international athletes like Rob Heffernan can hope to get the maximum amount. For younger up and coming athletes, their grants, if any, are a lot smaller and money is always an issue. They have the dilemma of trying to do the training required to reach an international standard and still be able to support themselves.
An interesting development on the Internet in the last year or two has been the use of sites like Kickstarter whereby people are asked to fund various business ideas and projects. The concept is called 'crowd sourcing'.
With those two facts in mind, some of Ireland's up and coming stars are now looking for funding for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Brother and sister Thomas and Jessie Barr from Waterford are top Irish hurdlers. Thomas put in some great performances in 2013 and came within five one-hundredths of a second of equaling the Irish 400m hurdles record. Jessie is the second fastest woman on the Irish all time list for the 400m hurdles.
This is their fundraising video...
This is the Barr's fundraising page.
Sarah Lavin from Limerick is just 19 years old and is already the 3rd fastest woman in the 100m hurdles on the Irish all time list.

Run the Line for Dublin Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team Dublin Mountains, November 30th, 2013
Run the Line for Dublin Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team...Dublin Mountains, November 30th, 2013...www.runtheline.ie
Run the Line is a fundraising event for Dublin Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team.
Our mountains can be used for so much for the hardy among us – walking, climbing, camping, mountain-biking, kayaking and hillrunning.
Our event “Run the Line” aims to cater for both the seasoned hill-runner and also those runners who want to give the hills a try – a choice of two routes, each with plenty of climbs and varied surfaces. See our “route” section for details on the options.
The participant will get to enjoy the views of Dublin City and the invigorating feeling of running through beautiful pine forests, all the while knowing that our mountain rescue team is at hand to cater for any eventuality. And the fact that you are raising funds for a vital service on top of that!
The Dublin Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team was set up to help people in need of assistance in the hills and mountains, and we cater for a broad range of recreational users of the Dublin and Wicklow Mountains.
For the past few years we have successfully run a night and day time hikes over the mountains, to fund-raise for our life-saving activities ('Walk the Line').
There is always a cadre of lean, hardy hill-runners who choose to do this event much faster than the majority, by running across the route. We decided that it might be worthwhile to run an event specifically for runners and so the idea for “Run the Line” was born.
About the Team
The Dublin & Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team is an entirely voluntarily operated 112 / 999 service available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. While our team’s main area of operation is in the Dublin and Wicklow mountains, we also cover as far as the Cooley Mountains in Co. Louth.

Jessie Owens would have been 100 last Thursday
Jesse Owens (September 12, 1913 – March 31, 1980) was one of the most famous athetes of the 20th century having won four Gold medals at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin...one each in the 100 metres, the 200 metres, the long jump, and as part of the 4x100 meter relay team. This was of course at a time when Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party were on the rise in Germany.
Last Thursday would have been Jesse Owens 100th birthday. This video clip shows an iinterview with four time Gold medalist Harrison Dillard on his memories of Jessie Owen.
The short video starts after the commercial.

Following on from the successful inaugural 10K Night Run last year, the 2013 event will be bigger and better with expanded capacity as 10,000 runners are expected to take to the streets. The run starts at 9.00pm on Sunday 28th April and runners can register for the event at www.samsungnightrun.com.
The expected route for the race will start at College Green, Dame Street and will conclude in the Docklands area. It will include some of Dublin’s most iconic and historic landmarks taking in the GPO, the Custom’s House, the Convention Centre and Samuel Beckett Bridge.
Lord Mayor of Dublin Naoise Ó Muirí said, “One of my priorities as Lord Mayor of Dublin has been to encourage Dubliners to get active and particularly to take up running in some of Dublin’s great road races. The Samsung Run Dublin @ Night 10k is a great opportunity to race through the historic streets of Dublin. I have heard great reports of last year’s run and I can’t wait to join the 10,000 runners tackling this race with a difference on 28th April. I commend Dublin City Council, Samsung Ireland and the other statutory agencies for this initiative and look forward to seeing you all on the start line.”
Gary Twohig, General Manager, Samsung IT & Mobile Ireland, said “The Samsung Run Dublin @ Night 10K is back with a bang this year; it will be bigger and brighter than our inaugural event last year. 10,000 runners are expected to take to the streets to get involved in what is becoming a must-do running event. The majority of this course is flat so we’re expecting great times from the elite athletes who joined us last year. It’s a great opportunity to experience Dublin in a very special way and I would encourage runners to register early to ensure their place on the night. We are very appreciative of the high level of support from Dublin City Council and the other statutory agencies in the city to ensure that we have a safe and enjoyable event on the night “.
